The much-anticipated trailer launch of Gadar 2, the sequel to Anil Sharma’s 2001 blockbuster cross-border drama, took place on Wednesday. Alongside the film’s cast and makers, including actors Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel, the event coincided with Kargil Vijay Divas – India’s annual commemoration of soldiers lost to the Kargil war. However, it was Deol’s statement on India-Pakistan relations that stole the spotlight and garnered mixed reactions from the public.

At the launch, Deol, who is also a BJP MP from Punjab’s Gurdaspur, cited “political blame game” as the cause of hatred between India and Pakistan, as reported by ANI. He held, “There is love on both sides. It is the political blame game that creates hatred between India and Pakistan, a theme reflected in this film. Both nations comprise people who seek peace, as we are essentially one and the same.”

While some appreciated his call for peace and understanding, many from India criticized the actor’s remarks on Twitter (now termed X), as being too diplomatic or even opportunistic to gain a wider audience, especially in Pakistan.

A person on X pointed out, “What is this Aman ki Asha b* this guy is peddling? Wasn’t Gadar all about Pak bashing?” Another remarked, “The shameful statement came out on Kargil Vijay Diwas by so called patriot at the promotion event of Gadar 2. What’s wrong if gems of Bollywood speaks against Bollywood then, who doesn’t care about anyone’s sentiments?”

One more inquired, “He is Sunny Deol, BJP MP. On the eve of Vijay Diwas, he said [this]. Politics is done by people in power Modi govt is in power. Has Deol targeted PM Modi? Was it necessary to praise Pakistanis on the eve of Kargil Diwas where we lost many of our jawans against Pakistan?” Meanwhile, a user mocked, “Haha. Sunny Deol must have the common sense that people on this side [India] will not take this comment lightly. They will boycott the movie. And people on that side don’t have the money to buy tickets to his movie!”

Gadar 2, helmed by director Anil Sharma, features Deol and Patel reprising their iconic roles of Tara Singh and Sakina, respectively. The film is set to release on August 11 and is co-produced by Anil and Zee Studios. As the sequel comes after more than two decades since the original Gadar, expectations and anticipation among fans are high.

While the film’s trailer launch garnered attention for multiple reasons, it remains to be seen how Deol’s statement will impact the overall reception of Gadar 2. The controversy surrounding his remarks highlights the sensitive nature of India-Pakistan relations and the significance of public figures’ comments in shaping public opinion.
